Board self-assessment questionnaire

70 questions · about 8 minutes to answer

These are the survey questions board members answer about their own board. Some boards call this a board evaluation. It covers what the board is responsible for, how it works together, and how it relates to the chief executive. Read them here, copy them into your own template, or run them as the free assessment.

The chief executive answers a small number of these too, and their answers are reported in a separate column rather than folded into the board average. Where the two disagree is usually the most useful thing in the report.

Reading the list is one thing. Getting honest answers to it is another, and it is mostly a problem of anonymity — people answer differently when they believe the answer can be traced back. Running the assessment collects these anonymously, withholds any section too small to report safely, and compares your results against organizations of a similar budget and focus area.
